He was a retired oil field worker and farmer. He was formerly of Corpus Christie, TX, but had resided in the Hopper community the past 30 years.
Survivors are his wife, Verna True Straton Birdwell of Hopper; two sons, James Cleveland Birdwell of Liberty, TX, and Bertie Franklin Birdwell of Houston, TX; two daughters, Vera True Hoke of Orange, TX, and Doris Evelyn Barnes of Houston, TX; a sister, Lora Clark of Temple, TX; 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Services were held in the Hopper Church of Christ with Harold Vaughn officiating. Burial was in the Hopper Cemetery by Davis Funeral Home.
