An inquest into the death early Tuesday morning of Marion Isaac (M.I.) Mathews, 73, a resident of Sweetwater for 20 years, was being continued by Peace Justice M. C. Manroe pending the accumulation of additional evidence.

Mr. Mathews was killed instantly about 8:30 Tuesday morning by a pistol bullet which penetrated the left side of the neck, just above the collar bone, ranged upward and emerged just to the right of the crown of the head.

An ambulance attendant said he found Mr. Mathews in bed. A gun lay nearby. The body was found at 1107 Cypress.

According to Mrs. Mathews' version to investigating officers, her husband had been despondent of late and had frequently talked of taking "drastic steps" but she said she had been able to dissuade him until Tuesday morning. She said he was going somewhere and wanted to know if she wanted to go. She said she told him she would go anywhere with him he wanted to go.

She said when she saw the gun in his hand, she ran outside the room and presently heard the report of the gun. She returned, she said, to find him dead.

Mr. Mathews came to Sweetwater in 1927. He had been engaged in business here until recently when he sold his home and he and his wife went to the West Coast. They returned from the coast some weeks ago.

His last business was the operation of a service station at the corner of Lamar and Oklahoma.

He had served as constable of Precinct No. 1, and was well known among law enforcement officials of this area.

Funeral services for Mr. Mathews were held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in the Church of Christ. Frank B. Shepherd, minister of the church, officiated. Burial was in the Sweetwater Cemetery under direction of Wells Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Ney Sheridan, Sr., J. W. Butler, Neely D. Reeves, James Cochran, Clif Boswell and Bud Brown.

Mr. Mathews was survived by the widow, whom he married recently following the death of his first wife, and four sons, Roy, who was in Chicago attending the furniture market at the time, Clarence, both of Sweetwater, Ernest of Los Angeles, Archie of Fort Worth; two daughters, Mrs. Lucy Ottinger, Sweetwater, and Mrs. Pauline Chapman, New Braunfels; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
