Mrs. Janie Anderson Hughes, mother-in-law of the late J. Rowlett Paine, mayor of Memphis from 1920-28, died at her home in Manchester, Tenn., at 9:30 a.m. yesterday morning. She was 85. Mrs. Hughes was born in Woodville, in south Mississippi, and lived there and in McComb, Miss., most of her life. She was an instructor in English literature, teaching in several Mississippi preparatory schools and colleges, including Gulf Park and Blue Mountain Colleges. In 1919 she was elected president of the Mississippi Congress of Mothers and Parent-Teacher Associations. Her husband was Henry Preston Hughes, also a prominent Mississippi educator. Mr. Hughes died in 1914. Mrs. Hughes lived much of the time from 1920-50 in Memphis with Mrs. Paine. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Episcopal Cathedral. Mrs. Hughes leaves three sons, 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. The grandchildren include Mrs. W.L. Whittemore and Miss Janie V. Paine of 2194 South Parkway East and Mrs. Frank Newcombe Butler, wife of the Episcopal rector at Jackson Tenn. Services will be at 3 p.m. tomorrow at Winchester with the Rev. Mr. Butler officiating.
