daughter of Oscar Burton and Nettie Loretta Wheat Elam, died Saturday, Aug. 12,
2001 in Topeka, KS.
Mrs. Mitchell was married to the Rev. Charles F. Mitchell, Jr., when he came
from Oklahoma to be her pastor at St. Luke's Methodist Episcopal Church, South,
in Springfield, MO and together they served churches in Southwest Missouri,
Oklahoma, and New Mexico for 42 years.
Two years after Charles died in 1978, Loretta quit teaching school at age 62,
and entered St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City, MO, for her own
enrichment and to see what they were saying "at the top" about the subjects she
had heard from the pulpit for over six decades. She graduated from the seminary
at age 65 with a Master of Divinity degree and a Specialization in Gerontology.
She had previously graduated from Tulsa University in Oklahoma after studying at
the University of Missouri in Springfield and Sul Ross University in Alpine. She
was a pastor at Methodist Churches in Stillwater, OK and Sweetwater, TX.
Memorials services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, August 16, 2001 at the
Boston Avenue United Methodist Church in Tulsa, OK, led by her three children,
the Rev. Paul B. Mitchell of Topeka, KS; Charles F. Mitchell of San Diego, CA;
and Mary R. Burrows of Sweetwater, TX. Internment will be in Memorial Park
Cemetery, Tulsa, OK, where a Methodist Circuit Rider insignia has been placed
between Loretta's and Charles' names on the same headstone.
