Shirley Ayleene Greer

nee Bangs

98 years old, born raised and died in Seattle on October 22, 2015.

Shirley was born to Christine and Norval Bangs in Ballard on July 14, 1917, Bastille Day. A sister, Vivienne came along October, 1919.

Shirley attended Webster Grade School and then Ballard High where she met the dashing Vern Greer. An intense courtship ensued then marriage. Over the course of their marriage they had three children, Shirley Ann, Lynne Jean and finally James Mitchell. Vern opened his own lumber business while Shirley stayed home to raise kids. Life was good.

The three children married, again, again AND again. The grandchildren proliferated, 14, in all, then great grandchildren now totaling 16 and still counting.

Vern and Shirley celebrated 80 years of marriage in August of this year.

Shirley was a Bon Vivant, loving a good party and a Perfect Manhattan, a risk taker, riding a donkey down a precipice without rails into Molokai, and the family matriarch pulling rank frequently. She was NOT a cook but that's a whole other story, not a whiner nor did she tolerate whining, or an athlete unless shopping was classified as a sport. Shirley was a long time parishioner of Our Lady of the Lake in Seattle and St. Catherine on Kauai, HI and there was rarely a Saturday night that did not begin with 5 p.m. Mass.

Bon Voyage, Shirley!

There will be no funeral or memorial service per her wishes.

Thanks to all who played a part in her very long life. A special thanks to Hospice for easing her into the next life.

Shirley is survived by her husband Vern, their three children, 13 grandchildren (predeceased by grandson Tyler Greer), 15 great grandchildren (predeceased by Zachary Lyter) and predeceased by her sister, Vivienne Davidson.

The family requests you toast her at your next happy hour and remember to visit your grandparents if you are lucky enough to have them.

In the words of Isaac Asimov, "Life is pleasant, Death is peaceful. It's the transition that is troublesome."
