He married the love of his life, Ethel Jackson, on January 23, 1954 at the Roseville United Methodist Church. She preceded him in death on October 19, 1995.

He is survived by four children: Dave (Suzanne) Huston of Roseville, IL; Susan (Rick) McWhorter of Bloomington, IL; Mike (Deb) Huston of Urbandale, Iowa; Linda (Mike) McConnaughay of Homewood, IL; one sister, Barbara McCreight (Bert, deceased) of New Albany, Indiana; eight grandchildren: Mark Huston, Joshua McWhorter, Christina McWhorter, Brad Hansen (Athena), Tina Hansen Pickett (Jerome), Emma Huston, Ryan McConnaughay, Melissa McConnaughay and one great grandchild, Abigail McConnaughay along with many nieces and nephews.

John attended 2 one room school houses from the age of 6 years old – 8th grade (Sisson and Parker Schools), riding on his Shetland pony, Snip. He graduated from Roseville High School, attended Iowa State, majoring in agriculture and served in the United States Navy during World War II. He served as gunner on a submarine-chaser ship for 4 years after which he returned home to Roseville. He farmed together with his father until Ira's death, after which he and Ethel managed the family farm where they raised their four children. John Huston was one of the initial adopters of no-till farming in Warren Country.

John had a deep love for his family, friends and his community. He was involved in the Warren County Farm Bureau and enjoyed many activities with young and old alike such as driving the tractor for hay rack rides in the fall and playing baseball with his grandchildren. John and Ethel participated regularly in a local card club for almost two decades. He led by example with his love for the Lord and studying the Bible, and he and Ethel were very involved in the Roseville United Methodist Church. They also enjoyed traveling to different regions of the United States throughout their marriage, including camping trips with their family.
