J. O. Workman Fatally Hurt in Fall.

Joseph O. Workman, 30, a city fireman, of 1028 South Second Street, died at 4 a.m. yesterday at Memorial Hospital of a head injury sustained at 12:27 a.m. from a fall from the read of a fire engine. Mr. Workman was riding a service truck, which had stopped at Ninth and Monroe Streets en route to a fire at 1123 East Adams Street. It was thought that his fellow fireman that he lost his balance in reaching for the arm rod as the truck started. The ladder truck, which was immediately behind, pulled to stop and the fireman picket up the injured man. A passing motorist rushed him to the hospital.
Regularly assigned to No. ? Engine House at Fourth Street and South Grand Avenue, Mr. Workman would have completed 2 years with the fire department next month. He had been transferred to No. 1 Engine House July 1 to fill in during vacations.
Born Sept. 3, 1884, Mr. Workman was a lifelong resident of Sangamon County. He married Helen Vaughn April 7, 1908, in Dawson. Besides his wife, he leaves son George W. and two grandsons, George and Donald, all of the city.
