Mr. Thomas Franklin Barber, Jr., 84, of Woodleaf, NC passed away Sunday, November 15, 2015 at the Glenn A. Kiser Hospice House.

Born March 14, 1931 in Iredell County, NC to the late Alma Stockard Barber and Thomas F. Barber, Sr., he was a graduate of Woodleaf High School Class of 1949. Tom worked in textiles at Burlington Industries in Cooleemee until it closed then worked until his retirement at Clariant.

Tom was an active member at Woodleaf United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, served on numerous committees, and was Layperson of the Year 1996.

Many children in the community fondly remember Tom coaching and teaching them baseball. Tom loved country music and at one time his band, The Country Cowboys, had a radio program on WSAT. He enjoyed picking the bass guitar with friends, and greatly enjoyed celebrating his 84th birthday with a jam session. Tom started the Woodleaf Community Garden at Woodleaf United Methodist Church. He always enjoyed working in his vegetable garden and growing many varieties of sunflowers, as well as fishing when he was able.

Surviving is his wife of 64 years, Loretta Watson Barber; sons; John T. Barber and wife Vanessa of Woodleaf, NC; Benny S. Barber and wife Donna of Woodleaf, NC; grandchildren: Christy B. Ruck of Concord, NC; Graig T. Barber of Concord, NC; Dennis S. Barber and wife Kristen of Salisbury, NC; and Tara B. Smith and husband Garett of Woodleaf, NC; and great-grandchildren: Corbin and Evan Barber, Gavin Barber, Trista Ruck, Sydney and Cameron Smith.

The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 PM Monday (Nov. 16) at Summersett Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be held 2 PM Tues. (Nov. 17) at Woodleaf United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Mike Duncan & Rev. Sybil Perrell. Burial will follow at Woodleaf United Methodist Church. The Woodleaf Civitan club will sit as a group.
