CHESTER LEWIS
July 1925-Nov. 2015
Beloved husband, father, and grandfather - WWII Veteran

Chester Lewis, 90 of Kenilworth, NJ, passed away on Nov. 13, 2015. Visitation is at Higgins and Bonner Funeral Home, 582 Springfield Ave., Westfield, NJ on Monday from 5 to 8 pm. The funeral will be Tuesday at 10 AM at St. Theresa’s Church in Kenilworth with burial at Hollywood Memorial Park.

The youngest of eight siblings, he was born in Newark to Lillian and Henry. Chester followed in the footsteps of his brothers Willie and Elmer and enlisted at age 18 in the Navy in 1943. He served his country honorably and with pride as a fireman first class aboard the USS Birmingham during the Battle of Leyte Gulf. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star Medal. He was a humble hero who served the way he lived, with loyalty, integrity and his trademark sense of humor.

As he raised his family, Chester continued to serve in his community. He was a member of the Kenilworth Board of Education for 18 yrs., as well as an active member of Boy Scouts and Little League. He was a hard working long tome employee at Schering-Plough but always found time for his hobbies of boating, fishing, watching sports, crossword puzzles and summers at the Jersey Shore.

His greatest passion, however, was always his family. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 62 yrs., Joan (Heitmann) and his sons, Gary, John and his wife Ann,

Glenn and his wife Adele, and his cherished grandchildren, Ryan Lewis, Jessica Lewis-Styler and her husband Zachary, and Stephanie Lewis
