∼Navy Lieutenants Matthew I. Lowe (33) and Nathan H. Williams (28) were killed Wednesday 6 April 2011 when their Super Hornet F/A-18F crashed into a field near NAS Lemore. Investigation is underway to determine the cause.

The two-seater F/A-18F crashed into a field a half-mile from Naval Air Station Lemoore during a "routine" training flight, Naval Air Forces officials said in a statement. Both were assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 122 based at Lemoore, in California's Central Valley.

Lowe, a pilot from Plantation, Fla., was commissioned in February 2003 and has flown with VFA-122 since July 2009, according to the Navy. He had previously flown with VFA-94, also based at Lemoore, and has earned the Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal and National Defense Service Medal.

Williams, a naval flight officer from Oswego, N.Y., was commissioned in May 2004, according to the Navy. He flew with VFA-213 based at NAS Oceana, Va., and reported to VFA-122 in January 2010. His military awards include the Air Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and Pistol Marksmanship Medal.
