Founder of the Mothers' Union
Daughter of Thomas Heywood & Mary Elizabeth Barton. Married Rt Rev George Henry Sumner on 26 Jul 1848 at Colwall, Herefordshire by Bishop Charles Richard Sumner, father of the groom.
While at her husband's parish of Old Arlesford, Mary became concerned for the women in the parish. In 1885, her husband became the suffragan Bishop of Guildford in the diocese of Winchester, and a residentiary canon of Winchester Cathedral. In the same year she was asked to speak at a Church Congress in Portsmouth and it was from this event that the Mothers' Union was formed.

To the Glory of God and in gratitude to Mary Elizabeth Sumner, Founder of the Mothers' Union, AD 1885, this buttress is given by members of the Empire in recognition of her work for the sanctity of home life. AD 1912".
Mary died at 1 The Close, Winchester.
