Gladys Turner Barker of Remington Road, Hopkinsville, Ky. died Thursday, April 7, 2011 following a long illness. She was 91. Visitation will be from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, April 16 at Hughart & Beard Funeral Home, Hopkinsville. Private graveside services will be held at a later time. Mrs. Barker was born Dec. 14, 1919, in Skipperville, Ala. to the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Frank Turner. Mrs. Barker and her late husband, Dr. Denzil G. Barker, lived 40 years in Hindman, Ky. prior to retiring to Hopkinsville in 1988 to be near children and grandchildren. Mrs. Barker was a registered nurse, earning her certification from Charity Hospital, New Orleans, where she met and married Dr. Barker. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Hopkinsville, and had been a longtime Sunday school teacher at Hindman Baptist Church. Mrs. Barker is survived by her daughter, Dennie Barker Burke, Hopkinsville, and two sons, Dean Gregory Barker of Houston and Dr. Mark Turner Barker of Knoxville, as well as six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and one sister, Jean Millican of Umatilla, Fla. Mrs. Barker was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, as well as by three sisters, Eldis Medley, Skippersville, Ala.; Frances Dean, St. Augustine, Fla., Loyce Bernice Carpenter, Columbus, GA., and three brothers, Calvin Turner and Charlie Carroll Turner, Skipperville, Ala. and Eldwood Turner, Louisville, Ala. Mrs. Barker's grandchildren are Barrett Burke Russell, Watertown, Tenn., Lucia Barker Burke, Murfreesboro, Tenn., Whitney Barker Roberts, Houston, Leanne Barker, Houston, Dr. Gregory Mark Barker, Dallas and Matthew Barker, Knoxville. Great-grandchildren are Aubrey, Turner, Burke, Boone, Graham and Hatchett Russell, Watertown, Tenn.; Luke and Cale Barker, Dallas; and James and Ben Roberts, Houston.
