John "Jack" E. Chance, 90, a longtime resident of Montclair, died of Parkinson's disease on Saturday, Dec. 17, in his Maplewood home.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 2:30 p.m., in Union Congregational Church, 176 Cooper Ave., Montclair.

After graduating from Montclair High School in 1939 and Cornell University in 1943, Mr. Chance served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed at headquarters in the Philippines. He served again during the Korean War before moving his young family back to Montclair, where he lived until 1997.

A manufacturer's representative for most of his career, Mr. Chance eventually formed the partnership of Stanley-Chance Inc., which had clients in Scotland and the United States, and maintained an office in Montclair.

Mr. Chance was an active participant in organizations dedicated to the preservation of local and New Jersey history. In 1964 he was appointed by the mayor to serve on Montclair's committee for the New Jersey Tercentenary. He was one of the founders of the Montclair Historical Society, which began with saving the Israel Crane House in 1965. He served several terms on the executive board of the Society, led many trips and wrote the monthly newsletter for 17 years. He was Montclair's first official town historian.

Mr. Chance was also active in the North Jersey Highlands Historical Society, the Canal Society of New Jersey, and the League of Historical Societies of New Jersey, and served on the board of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities. He received an Award of Recognition from the New Jersey Historical Commission in 1984 for his many efforts.

After retiring in 1990, Mr. Chance took part in helping the College Women's Club prepare for their twice-yearly book sales that raise scholarship funds. From 1993 to 1996, Mr. Chance volunteered with the New Jersey Save Outdoor Sculpture project, which was sponsored by the Montclair Art Museum. This led him to a new avocation that meshed his interests in history and photography. He continued to travel throughout the state to research, document and photograph sculpture, and gave many slide lectures about outdoor sculpture.

Mr. Chance was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Lucille (née Veevers). He is survived by his children, Carol Stoddart (Gary), Betty Hawthorne (Rick), Jenny Chance (David Rutledge), and Bill Chance (Debra Adleman); his sister, Sybil Harp; his wife's brother, Arnold Veevers; his grandchildren, Aubrey, Willow, Silas and Ivy Chance, and Bill Stoddart; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Montclair Historical Society, 108 Orange Road, Montclair NJ 07042, or to another historic preservation organization of the reader's choosing.
