Germaine Decauwer immigrated from Roubaix, France, April 23, 1901. She left Europe from the port of Antwerp, Belgium aboard the ship Zeeland and entered the United States at Ellis Island New York at age seven with her mother Emma and most of her other siblings. In Ellis island records Germaine's first name is wrongly spelled as "Germain" and her sex is listed as "male" both these entries are obvious mistakes. Her nationality is listed as Belgian.
Germaine worked in the textile mills of Lawrence Mass as a weaver and remained in the textile industry all of her working life. In 1912 she participated in the famous "Bread and Roses" strike of Lawrence, MA as did so many other mill workers with a multitude of ethnic backgrounds.
Germaine was the matriarch of her family and always demonstrated the highest standards, and finest attributes to her family, friends and to all who were fortunate enough to have known her.
Germaine's first husband was Julien Albert Jonckheere born in France in 1886. Julien's father was Charles Jonckheere and his mother's maiden name was Therese Decasteker. Julien & Germaine were married 12-23-1911 in North Andover, MA and registered their marriage in Lawrence, MA. Julien returned to France a comparatively short time after their marriage and before the start of WW1 in 1914. He survived the war but never returned to the United States. Germaine & Julien only had the one child, a daughter, Gladys Henriette Jonckheere Daigneault.
Germaine had two other marriages in later years one to Alois Paul Cannie born May 13, 1888 and years after his death another marriage to Albert Desmulier. She had no other children during her lifetime.
