John Jack "J J" Hutson was born on December 17, 1840 in Red Clay, Georgia, the son of John Hutson ( –1860) and Ashley/Asba (McAbee) Hutson (1830–ca 1869). {It is noted that both the 1900 and 1910 censuses have him born about 1845.} At an early age he moved to Spartanburg, South Carolina.

He was a Confederate soldier with a Georgia company during the Civil War and participated in the battle along Missionary Ridge near Chattanooga. Sometime after the the war he moved to near Franklin, Tennessee where he was a farmer for some years. He also lived in Nashville for several years about 1899 and was a bricklayer. Later he lived near Murfreesboro before returning to Nashville about 1928.

J J was a member of the Church of Christ and was married about 1872 in Tennessee to Elizabeth "Elizzie" Cartwright (1842–1927).

A retired farmer and Confederate veteran living on Saunders Avenue, Rural Route 3 out of Nashville with his son Noah, he was 98 years old and a widower when he passed away at Nashville General Hospital on February 23, 1939 after an illness of ten days.

Survivors included his daughters Mrs Addie Jarrells, Mrs Jennie Ambrose and Mrs Katie Batey, sons Noah Hutson, Alex Hutson and Robert Hutson all in Nashville, thirty-one grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on February 24th at the home of his son Noah Hutson on Saunders Avenue, and burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery, Nashville.

Much of the above is from his Death Certificate, with Noah Hutson of Saunders Avenue as the informant. Additional information is from his published obituary in NASHVILLE BANNER on February 24, 1939.
