Likely born in Przybyszyn and raised in nearby Tworkowice. When WWII broke out in Europe, he served as a soldier in the Polish Army under General Władysław Anders throughout the war, including fighting in the Battle of Monte Cassino in Italy. After the war, he was forced to leave Poland and chose to immigrate to Canada. After setting sail aboard the USS Sea Robin, he arrived at Pier 21, Halifax, on 11 November 1949 (though the ship did not disembark until the next day), and moved to Ontario. He took on various jobs during this time, eventually working at the mines in Sudbury. In 1962, he decided to visit his family back home in Poland. During this time, a local parish priest decided to set him up with one of his (the priest's) cousins. After a long drive, they arrived at her house. Upon meeting Jan, he and he woman, Janina, fell in love and married only weeks later. In early 1963, she moved to Canada to be with him and start a family. When they got older, they relocated to Hamilton to be closer to their family. There, he died of prostate cancer in 2001, after having battled it for about 4 or 5 months.
