CLINTON -- Lois Helen Skidgel, 83, a resident of 714 Main St., died peacefully Wednesday, May 9, 2007, at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Thayer Unit, Waterville, following a short period of failing health.
She was surrounded by her children, two nieces, Sylvia Meservey and Carol Small, who cared for her during her illness.
She was born in Woodland on Aug. 12, 1923, the daughter of James and Helen (Smith) Skidgel and was educated in Woodland.
During her lifetime she lived in New Haven, Conn., and worked at Guilford Gravure as a steel machinist.
She moved back to Maine in 1970 and worked alongside her brother, Sydney Skidgel, at Skidgel's Warehouse in Freedom until 2005.
Lois enjoyed woodworking, gardening, and canning. She loved to repair anything that was broken.
She will be especially remembered for her famous apple pie, fried chicken, potato stuffing, and cupcakes.
She welcomed everyone who arrived at her front door and touched everyone's life in a special way.
She was predeceased by her brother, Woodrow Skidgel; her husband, Harold Griffith; a son, David Griffith; and her three sisters, Avis Harrington, Adeline Burroughs, and Edna Dyson.
She is survived by her brother, Sydney Skidgel of Plymouth; her son, Stanley Eveskcige of Clinton; her daughter, Phyllis Motteler and spouse David, of Tacoma, Wash.; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and her best friend, Rita LaChance of Fairfield, who cared for her during her illness.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, May 14, at the Village Cemetery, Peltoma Avenue, Pittsfield.
Arrangements are entrusted to D.H. Shorey Funeral Chapel, 191 Hartland Ave., Pittsfield.
