Carl Arthur Hulbert, of East Millcreek, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family. Carl, we are sure, was met by the "love of his life," Kathryn "Deon" Robinson Hulbert to continue their journey together.

Carl was born March 3, 1923 in Salt Lake City to Arthur Davies Hulbert and Effie Lena Erickson, the third of six children.

Carl attended South High School, where he excelled at sports; he was on the All-City Basketball team for two years, lettered in football, tennis, and basketball, and later refereed. He served as a Navy pilot during World War II, upon his return he used the GI Bill to graduate from the University of Utah Law School in 1950.

During this time, he met Deon. They were married on February 12, 1945 in Jacksonville, Florida; the marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple.

Carl was the youngest insurance commissioner in the country, which lead to his lifelong career as an independent Insurance Consultant, working with all the major companies and as Western Counsel for the NAII and Allstate for many years.

Carl and Deon traveled extensively enjoying trips with their family and their many friends around the world. Carl was considered by many as a "great" friend; he supported and helped many people in his life, staying true to them until the end.

As much as he loved his family and friends, sports was a close second. Later, golf became his passion; he was longtime member and served as President of the Salt Lake Country Club. He won numerous tournaments and enjoyed hours on the course teaching his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed attending car races with his family, and hunting and fishing with his boys.

Carl was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in various callings and had a strong testimony of the gospel. He had the privilege of baptizing and ordaining many of his grandchildren.

Family was paramount to Carl, especially his grandchildren, although he had high expectations he was always present for them and had a special bond with each one. Carl took his job as a father seriously, he gave us guidance and support, encouragement, he had a generous spirit, and most of all he gave us love.

Carl is survived by his children, Kathryn Deon Penske (Roger) and their children, Mark Hulbert Penske (Lori, one great-grandchild), Jay Carl Penske (Elaine, one great-grandchild), and Blair Hall (Brandon, five great-grandchildren); JoAnn Hulbert-Eagan and her daughter, Meghan J. Eagan (Ryan Heffernan, three great-grandchildren); Steven Carl Hulbert (Cathy); David Robinson Hulbert (Buffy) and their children, Carl Alexander Hulbert, David Winston Hulbert, Kathryn Elizabeth Hulbert, and Helen Lucy Hulbert; Jan Gatrell (Scott) and their children, Emily Deon Waldbillig (Trygg, three great-grandchildren), Tory Hulbert Gatrell (Adriane, three great-grandchildren), and Jennifer Jan Nish (Martin); Michael Scott Gatrell; Carl Gordon Gatrell (Kelsey, one great-grandchild); and Shag Hulbert and his two children, Carl Arthur Hulbert and Taylor Deon Hulbert; and his sister, Eleanor Barker. Carl was preceded in death by his loving wife, Deon; his parents, Arthur and Effie; brothers, Richard E. Hulbert and Gerald E. Hulbert; and sisters, Eda Katherine (Bunne) Fine and Patricia Reynolds.

The funeral services will be held in the Valley View Ward Chapel, 2000 East 3900 South, East Millcreek, on Friday, November 13, 2015 at 1:00 p.m.
Interment will be in the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 South Highland Drive (1450 East), East Millcreek.
