Lillie Snyder Neff, a homemaker for most of her long life who was able to recite poetry she learned as a child well past the time she turned 100, died Tuesday.
She was 112. Neff was extraordinarily well-educated for a woman of her generation and remained mentally sharp for nearly all of her life, her son-in-law Robert Rohrbaugh said."At that time, if you got through the fourth grade, you were lucky. I think she got through the eighth grade," Rohrbaugh said. "She could name all of the bones in your body up until about a year ago."
Rohrbaugh said he and his wife, Isabel, lived with Neff on the family farm near Dallastown most of their married life.
"I remember everything about her," Rohrbaugh said. "I lived with her for 48 years. We lived on a farm. It's been in her side of the family since pre-Civil War times. She was a hell of a good cook."
Isabel Rohrbaugh attributed her mother's longevity to her faith.
"She lived right. She was always a church person with faith in the Lord," she said.
Michael Wagner, deputy administrator of the York County Area Agency on Aging, said he did not know of any county resident older than Neff.
In addition to her work as a homemaker, Neff worked on the farm and in cigar factories, which was once a major industry in York County.
