Benjamin was a cabinet maker who worked in his father's piano factory, but also had a much varied and interesting life. He has been listed as all of the following over the course of his lifetime: Photographer, Provision Dealer, Mince Meat Manufacturer, Poultry Fancier, Farmer, Yeoman (farmer), Carpenter, Hats, Caps & Trunks Store, and a Vinegar Manufacturer. He was also an officer, 2nd Lieutenant, during the American Civil War in the Pennsylvania 5th Regiment Company C, and the 27th Pennsylvania Company H. His middle initial "K" most likely stood for Kugler, his paternal grandmother's maiden surname.
