Joyce Gilbert Cherry, 77, passed away Thursday, November 5, 2015 at home in Kinston, NC. Joyce was born March 19, 1938, in Pitt County to the late Cleveland Dixie and Verda Sanders Gilbert.

A service of love and remembrance will be Sunday evening at 6 pm at Armenia Christian Church, Kinston, NC of which she was a member and served as an elder and at times served as church pianist/organist. A reception and visitation will be held following the service.

A life-long educator and community supporter, Joyce graduated from Greenville High School and East Carolina University with baccalaureate and masters degrees. She completed various courses from UNC-Chapel Hill and did a study of Business Management in London, England, while enrolled at ECU. She has worked in the various music programs at Parkers Chapel FWB Church in Greenville, LaGrange FWB Church in LaGrange, Immanuel Baptist Church, Kinston, and Armenia Christian Church in Kinston. She has written teaching manuals for the Ayden FWB Press. She was active in and served as president of The Kinston Rotary Club, served as president of the Lenoir County Community Foundation in 2008 and 2009, served three terms as president of her sorority, Alpha Delta Kappa, and two terms as president of the local Lenoir County Historical Association. She received many awards and recognitions during her career such as the Athena Award given by the Chamber of Commerce in 2005 which celebrates advancing Women’s Leadership. She was one of the first ten selected for the award of “100 Incredible ECU Women” by the East Carolina Women’s Roundtable. She was named a Paul Harris Fellow twice in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world. She served as a student teacher supervisor for East Carolina University when she taught in the Lenoir County school system. She met and helped train many wonderful teachers in the school system today, including such as Faye DeBrul Barker and Sue Twiddle. During her many years of employment at Lenoir Community College, she served as an instructor, dean, and in several administrative positions. Near the end of her career, she served two terms as interim president of Lenoir Community College.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Cleveland Dixie Gilbert, Jr., of Smithfield; and a sister, Irene Gilbert Gurganus, of Greenville.

She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Glenn Franklin Cherry; godson, Tony Trotman and wife, Becky and their two children, of Farmville; sister, Ruth Forrest, of Wilkesboro; brother in-law, David Gurganus, of Greenville; and several nieces and nephews.
