William D. Fanton, 85, of Gilman, died at a local hospital on Saturday evening after a brief illness. He was a retired merchant.

Born on October 21, 1872, the son of Aaron and Mary Mooney Fanton, near Gilman, he was reared on the farm with his brother and sister and educated in local schools.

Fanton married Jennie Lavender, and to this union were born two sons, Dr. Lyle D. Fanton of Des Moines, and Aaron D. Fanton of Cedar Rapids.

Following the death of Mrs. Fanton, he married Mrs. Belle Ramsey and reared her son, Y.W. Ramsey, now of Fullerton, California.

Fanton operated a lumber yard in Newton for four years, and then returned to Gilman where he operated a mercantile store for many years. In 1935 he retired, but remained active until a few days before his death.

A member of Gilman Community Church, Fanton also belonged to Masonic Lodge No. 338 and Onyx chapter No. 350 of the Order of Eastern Star, both of Gilman.

Besides his two sons and his stepson, Fanton is also survived by his brother and sister, Elgin M. Fanton and Mrs. Elma C. Gould, both of Gilman.

Services at the Gilman Community Church, Rev. Frank Perry officiating, with pallbearers Charles Fanton, Gaylord Fanton, Wallace Fanton, DeWitt Lavender, Duane Muckler, and Harry Stewart. Burial in Prairie View Cemetery, Gilman, under the direction of the Smith Funeral Home.
