Ray G. Johnston, age 67, a resident of Wenatchee for the past 50 years, passed away on Friday, August 10, 2007, at Central Washington Hospital, after a long illness.

He was born in Cashmere, WA, to Carlos “Spec” Johnston and Josephine (Canary) Johnston. He graduated from Cashmere High School and was proud to be a “Bulldog”.

Ray was self-employed most of his life, owning a gas station, auto part store, pawn broker and finally finding his true passion and talent, in custom carburetor rebuilding. This gave him the nickname of “The Carb Man” to those in the industry. His custom tri and dual carb units were shipped world wide and he would take any phone call or visit from folks in need, taking their auto challenges as his challenges. His hands were frail but strong, he had a soft heart for anyone in need and helped those he could, asking very little in return. Those who had visited him, knew of the friendly “Howdy” that he would sing out, his trademark Hello. Ray had many interests before he became ill. Early in life, it was a passion for car racing, where he would awkwardly stuff his 6’ 6” stature into a custom early 1960’s Mini Cooper “S”, bringing smiles to those who watched. He won many trophies in that beloved mini cooper with his kids usually by his side. Ray was an enthusiastic NASCAR fan, never missing a televised event. He purchased land on Lake Chelan and spent his summers perfecting his cabin for his kids. Ray loved to sail his Hobbie Cat, fish for Lingcod, and ride motor bikes. His early stories of hunting camp, still were shared this past year. He was adventurous and loved life. He will be missed by many. He is survived by his children, Cheryl (Brad) Deisen of Usk, WA, Jonathan (Marcie) Johnston of Cashmere, Jeffrey Johnston of Wenatchee and Jodi (Bruce Gerber) Johnston of Wenatchee. He loved his four grandchildren, Rocky, Reesa, Stephannie and Chellbie. He is preceded in death by his mother, Josephine Hall. On Friday, August 17, 2007, there will be a Celebration of Life for Ray at the home of his daughter, where Ray resided until his death, at 1208 Poe Street, Wenatchee from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. “Dad you gave me hope and strength each day and I’ll love and miss you every day of my life”.
