Born to Jewell "Pink" and Perry Smelser and raised on the family farm, she became a "Rosie the Riveter," working in B-24 and B-29 factories as an Inspector responsible for ensuring that aircraft rolling off the line were as safe as possible in the skies over Germany and Japan. Since 1951, she had worked as Kitchen Manager for Denver Public Schools. Most importantly, she was a loving wife to Lyndell, who was a POW after being captured at the WWII battle of Anzio. Their son Jerry was killed in Vietnam in 1966.
