Emma was born the 4th of 11 children to pioneers Samuel Francis Lee and Ann Dodd White. Samuel F. Lee arrived in the Great Salt Lake Valley on the 28th of October 1849 in the Ezra T. Benson Company, with his father Alfred Gilham Lee as Captain of 10 wagons. Ann was 13 in the same company and was sent out of their wagon while her baby sister Charlotte was born. While sitting alone near the fire Samuel age 15 came to comfort her. Ann's father had died of the cholera plague at Winter Quarters (Council Bluffs) after having safely brought his family from the Louth Branch to New Orleans and up the Missouri River.
While in Salt Lake, Emma's grandmother married Benjamin Isaac Clegg, a young man willing to help her with her 5 young children, and they were sent to help settle what became Tooele, as was the Lee family. So her parents were not only early Utah Pioneers, but founding fathers of Tooele.
Emma married Brigham Harris Bowen on the 6th of April 1877 and they had 12 children of their own.
