James was the 3rd of at least 12 known children born in Tennessee to Martin Johnson, Sr. and his 1st wife, Sarah "Sally" Combs Johnson.

James had five children in Warren County, Tennessee by his 1st wife, Lydia Boyd: Robert, Pleasant Miller, Anna (m. James Castwell), Elizabeth (m. Col. James M. Johnson), and Abigail "Abbey" Johnson. Lydia died abt. 1836, after which James married 2nd Rachel Russell, daughter of John and Rhoda (Newberry) Russell.

James and Rachel moved to Northwest Arkansas and had eight children in what is now Madison County: Anglina Isabelle (m. William A. Gage), John Robert, Nancy (m. James Duncan), Lucy, Therisa "Threcey" (m. Miles Allen Rogers), James, Martin VanBuren and H.W. "Handy" Johnson.

James and Rachel are shown the 1850 Census for the Richland Township in Madison County. They lived along Cherry Creek. James was most likely buried in the nearby Cherry Creek Cemetery, which was on land owned by his 1st son, Robert, but no marker has been found.

Note that the "Boyd" and "Russell" surnames for James' two wives are interchanged between Lydia and Rachel in online family trees. Most agree the 1st was "Lydia" and the second "Rachel". The 1850 Census shows a "Sarah Russell, 16" in the same household. She is believed to be Rachel's younger sister. This would confirm her "Russell" surname and suggest Lydia's was "Boyd".
