WALLINGFORD — Audrey A. (Wubbenhorst) Elias, 93, of Ashlar Village, died Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015. She was the beloved wife of the late Walter Elias, also of Ashlar Village.

Audrey was born Jan. 30, 1922, in the Richmond Hill section of Queens, N.Y., and was the eldest child of the late William and Elizabeth (Bieg) Wubbenhorst. Prior to residing at Ashlar, she was a resident of Southbury, New Haven and Bethany, Cambridge, Mass., and Atlanta, Ga.

Audrey received a BS in political science from Hofstra University in 1943 and a certificate in fashion merchandising from the Tobe-Coburn School in Manhattan the following year. She established her professional career as a national marketing manager for Palm Beach Fabrics, a position that allowed her to travel all over the country.

Much of Audrey's career was spent as an executive for the R.H. Macy Company. She was the director of training and group manager in New Haven for many years and retired from a long career in retail as the human resource manager of Davison's, a Macy's company. Prior to her retirement, she created the human resource department for Subway International in Milford.

She was active in Bethany politics, chairwoman of the Democratic Party, and twice a candidate for the Connecticut legislature.

In her retirement, she enjoyed opera, travel, books, conversations and was an avid Scrabble player. She loved living at Ashlar Village and made many friends there.

Audrey is survived by her children, David (and Jane) Smith of Wallingford, Barbara Smith (and Peter Boody) of Northampton, Mass., Sarah Smith of Little Rock, Ark., and Ira (and Maureen) Smith of Sharon. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Megan Smith of Wallingford, Sarah Smith of Arlington, Va., and Rebecca Smith of Wallingford.

A memorial service will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, 2015, in the Hartog Center at Ashlar Village. A reception will follow. Interment in New North Cemetery, Woodbury, will be private.

Gifts in her memory may be sent to the Masonic Charity Foundation, P.O. Box 70, Wallingford; or Doctors Without Borders, 333 7th Ave., New York, NY 1001-5004 (doctorswithoutborders.org).
