Having married a scant few weeks before, on February 2, 1914, John, just returned to Saskatchewan, was involved in some type of tragic accident on March 24, and died a few hours after this event. The local history book gives no further detail. It is said that his funeral was the largest ever held in the district to that time. The funeral was attended by two-hundred persons accompanied by fifty teams of horses.

Ontario birth records show that John was born in October of 1886, therefore he was actually twenty-eight years old at the time of his death rather than twenty-six, as is engraved on his headstone.

John was the brother of Harry Weber, who would marry John's widow within a year.
