Based on the Melinda Bounds 1997 Survey of OLD and NEW Plateau Cemetery there were likely two headstones associated with this grave, one traditional and a military marker (see ledger shadow). As of 10/14/2023 there is only the granite traditional marker. As noted in the memorial images there is evidence (a shadow at the foot of the ledger) of a military headstone granite base that was present on the ledger of this grave at one time, similarly, there appears to be a granite base that was shifted to another unmarked grave nearby. The four holes in the granite base are consistent with bronze military plaques of that time period. The same has happened with the grave of Rayford Cunningham Sr. one grave to the south of this grave. His military marker would have included the inscription "Ossa US Navy" per the survey.
