Mr. Griffing of Winnsboro, was the son of Dr. Byron Osborn Griffing and Laura Fredrica Weir Griffing and a member of the First United Methodist Church and VFW Post #3155. Mr. Griffing or "Buckshot" to old friends and family was passionate about many things. The Civil War, Genealogy, Coin Collecting, Wall Street, and Nascar were among his favorites. He faithfully served his country during World War II and the Korean War serving as an aviation mechanic on the USS Wasp during World War II prior to it's sinking at Guadalcanal. Service dates from 1939-1959, retiring at the rank of Chief Petty Officer. After retiring from active duty with the United States Navy, he worked and eventually retired for the second time from the United States Post Office. He was preceded in death by his wife, Inez "Brownie" Cobb Griffing, his parents, daughter, Sandra L. Griffing Fischer, infant son, Buddy Griffing, brother, Dr. Asa Robert Griffing, grandson, John "Griff" William Griffing, III, great-granddaughter, Kara Ann Frazier. He is survived by, a son, John "Bill" William Griffing, Jr. and wife Bette, a daughter, Louella Griffing Ward and husband Carl, 6 grandchildren-Billy Ray Brower, Dovie Frazier, Sherry Smith, Joe Brower, Jennifer Johns, Chuck Herrington and son-in-law-Mike Fischer. Mr. Griffing died at age 86 at his home.
