On March 28, 1894, Katie married Alfred Rice Gardner in Atlantic IA.

In 1905, Alfred Rice Gardner left Katie and her family and moved to Chicago, IL where he lived until his death. Katie struggled to care for her family. Her boys did odd jobs such as drive cows to pasture daily for a neighbor, tend chickens and pigs, carry newpapers, washing dishes, housework, and caring for small children.

Her children all attended Eastside School (later renamed Lincoln Grade School in Atlantic IA).

On January 11, 1921 Katie married Edward Brown in Polk County IA.

Katies parents were John Arn of Ohio and Katherine Elizaabeth Schoendals of Germany.

Obituary
Mrs. Katherine Elizabeth Gardner, 67 a resident of Atlantic and community many years, died at 12:30 a.m. today in the Atlantic hospital where she had been a patient since yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Gardner, who suffered from heart trouble had been in poor health for about two years.

She was born on January 1, 1871 at Round Bottom Ohio, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Arn, and came with her parents to Grove City near Atlantic when 13 years old. Later she moved to Atlantic and had been a resident here since.

She is survived by six children, Lloyd Gardner of Waterloo, Mrs. B.M. Bopp of Atlantic, Mrs. Wolmer Jensen of Marne, Paul Gardner of Davenport, and Harold and Roy Gardner of Atlantic. There are 17 grandchildren.

Four brothers and five sisters also survive. They are: George Arn of Barrington IL, Harve Arn of Chicago, Charles Arn of Hanford CA, and Dave Arn of Atlantic, Mrs Lena Cook of Pueblo CO, Mrs Nora Harris of Fort Dodge, Mrs Clara Dysart of Union NE, Mrs Rose Luse of Alma NE, and Mrs Vela Smith of Guthrie OK.

Mrs Gardner was a member of the Local Methodist church.

Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Roland, Peacock & Baxter funeral home with The Rev. Claude W. Cooper officiating. Burial will be in the Atlantic Cemetery. The body will like in state at the funeral parlors until the time of service on April 8, 1938
