Lorin (Loren) Leonard Austin was born in Harrisburg, Lewis County, New York 25 Dec 1819, the son of Jedediah Austin and Eunice Burr. He is living with his widowed mother Eunice in the 1840 census in Watson, Lewis, New York and six siblings. He is found as Head of Household in the 1850 census, living with Eliza 22; George 2 as well as his mother Eunice and sisters Emeline; Catharine Salina and Eunice. No information has been found about Eliza. She apparently died soon after the census for Lorin had married Sarah D. Hart as his second wife about 1852. They had a son Loren Hart Austin who died 22 January 1855 age 2 years 10 days. Loren’s son George died on 30 January 1855 age 7 years 27 days. The Northern Journal published in Lowville, NY reported both deaths as sons of Loren Austin. A daughter Mary Cornelia was born in 1855 to Lorin and Sarah Austin.

In early January 1863 Lorin and Sarah D Austin sold property in Lewis County, NY and moved to
White Pigeon, Michigan. Tragedy followed the couple as little Cornelia died of diptheria on 14 March 1863 and Sarah died 7 April 1863 of liver complaint in White Pigeon. A notice of their deaths was published in The Journal and Republican on Wed April 29, 1863. Later that summer Lorin wrote a letter to his sister Salina Austin VanWagonen naming her newborn daughter Cornelia. In that letter he says he has moved from White Pigeon to Bristol, Indiana. Lorin was a Miller by trade and had returned to Porter, Cass, Michigan by 1870 when he is listed in the census as: Loren L. Austin, Miller age 50 born in New York. Rachel, Keeping House; James age 14 born Indiana and Sarah J age 12 born Ohio. The census taker implies the couple were married and the children were Lorin’s but they were actually Rachel’s children by her first marriage to Samuel Teague. (see census of 1860 in Porter, Cass, Michigan).

Michigan Marriage Records give a date of 10 March 1871 for the marriage of L.L. Austin and Rachel (Votaw) Teague in Cass, Michigan. Lorin and Rachel had three known children: Lora (May 1872-22 April 1873); Rosa (Rosela; Loaura; Rose) (29 March 1874- 1914) and Emery R. (17 Feb 1877-26 May 1904). They are still living in Porter, Cass Michigan in 1880. Lorin died 12 January 1882 one day after Rachel.

One of Lorin’s sisters, Amy Austin Rumble’s Estate Papers help to prove the relationships between the half siblings. They indicate two children Rosa and Emery Austin living in Haddam, Kansas in 1886. The Kansas census shows Rosa Austin and Emery Austin living with their brother James Teague and his wife in Haddam. Marriage records in Michigan for Sarah J Teague in 1880 give L.L. Austin as witness to the marriage.
