The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 18, in the Chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point by Reverend Scott Newton. Entombment will be in Guilford Memorial Park.
She was born December 2, 1940, in High Point, to John L. Newton and Goldia Sutton Newton.
Mrs. Akes was a graduate of High Point Central High School and attended High Point College. She had been employed by the High Point Housing Authority and later the Greensboro Housing Authority and had managed high rise housing facilities for the elderly in both cities. She was a member of Oak Hill Friends Meeting in High Point.
In 1962, in Tucson, Arizona, Mrs. Akes was married to W. John Akes who survives of the residence. Also surviving are a son, Marty Akes and wife, Allison of High Point; a daughter, Holly Bowman and husband, Travis of Winston-Salem; her mother, Goldia Newton of High Point; four grandchildren, Jacob Akes, Riley Bowman, Dylan Bowman and Madison Akes; her mother-in-law, Myra Akes of Nampa, Idaho and several close aunts, uncles and friends.
