On April 4th, 1862, Friend married Martha Ann 2nd daughter of Thomas and Mary Ann Morgan (nee Tonks). The Morgan and Tonks families were instrumental in establishing Wellington City (formerly Port Nicholson).

His age at death was incorrect in his obituary and on his headstone. Friend died aged 93 years and 15 days.
