She was born in Patrick County on Nov. 10, 1938, to Richard and Mildred Coleman Cobbler.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles T. Merritt; a daughter, Nancy Priddy; a brother, Joe Cobbler; and a sister, Rachel Cobbler.
She graduated from Hardin Reynolds Memorial School, worked at the Pentagon for five years and was a restaurant operator for many years. She was a member of Mayo Christian Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Lynn Boles and Darla Merritt, both of Lawsonville, N.C.; a son, Terry Merritt of Mount Airy, N.C.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four brothers, Marion Cobbler of Stuart, Wayne Cobbler of Rocky Mount, and Doug Cobbler and Larry Cobbler, both of Spencer; and a sister, Carolyn Cobbler of Spencer.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. today at Moody Funeral Home chapel in Stuart with the Rev. Ed Hartman officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home after the service, and other times at the home of her daughter, Lynn Boles.
