Lorene Dellinger Rutherford, 90, formerly of Petty, died at 6:05 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, at Heritage Care Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, in Fry and Gibbs Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Julie Halstead officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The family will be at 935 Wilburn Drive at other times.

Mrs. Rutherford was born Sept. 12, 1908, in Petty to Charles Sidney and Pearl Bruffett Dellinger.

She attended school at Petty and graduated from Honey Grove High School in 1924. She attended Sunset High School in Dallas and studied art with private tutors. During that time, she won first place in a billboard art contest sponsored by Lone Star Gas Co.

She married Newton Franklin Rutherford in Roxton Oct. 17, 1926. He died Feb. 19, 1987.

She was a lifelong member of Petty Methodist Church. Mrs. Rutherford worked as a artist for The Paris News illustrating furniture, jewelry and clothing for advertising. She, along with the late Ellen Conner, wrote and illustrated an advertising comic strip for the newspaper. She also illustrated a children's book, Two Little Frogs, written by Ms. Conner, and a cookbook for Holy Cross Episcopal Church.

Mrs. Rutherford worked at Perkins Brothers and Camp Maxey during World war II, and was a longtime employee in the credit department of Ayres Department Store. Her love of genealogy led her to many parts of the country in search of ancestors. She toured North Carolina many times with her parents obtaining information. She was a member of Joseph Ligon Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.

Travel was one of the loves of her life. She was always ready to go on a trip at a moment's notice. A trip to Europe in 1989 with her daughter was a highlight of her travels. It was there she heard the beautiful 'Blue Danube Waltz' along with other Strauss music played in the Vienna, Austria Concert Hall.

Survivors are two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Carlton of Lake Fork and Jo Ann Thompson Parkman of Paris; seven grandchildren, Richard Lee Carlton, Robert Alan Carlton, Randall Frank Carlton, Mary Kathryn Rodenberger, Gregory Brian Thompson, Mark Stephen Thompson, and Jeffrey Todd Thompson; 13 great-grandchildren, Blake Carlton, Elizabeth Carlton, Amy Carlton, Christina Carlton, Amanda Carlton, Ashley Rodenberger, Will Thompson, Andrew Thompson, Ryan Thompson, Jordan Thompson, Sydney Thompson, BoJustin Epting and JoAnna Epting; three great-great-grandchildren, Rebecca Carlton, Steven Kalke, and Kelsey O'Neal; a sister, Irma Richey of Paris; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Daly and Marie Schriewer, a brother, Charles Ray Dellinger; and two sons-in-law, Bill H. Thompson and Perry Carlton.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Mark Thompson, Todd Thompson, Rick Carlton, Robert Carlton, Randy Carlton, and Greg Thompson.

Memorials may be given to the Forest Hill Cemetery Association, Oak Park United Methodist Church, or Paris Public Library.
