Willie Dunn - 1926-2015

Willie Dunn was the second of eight children, born August 26, 1926, to the late Jessie and Beatrice Dunn in Trinity, TX. His early education included graduation from Trinity Colored High School. He later graduated from Prairie View A&M University, with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. He taught school in the Corrigan Independent School District.
He then joined the Army becoming a WWII veteran and moved to Houston. He attended Houston Community College to become a Certified Respiratory Therapist and worked at the Houston Pavilion Hospital for 5 years. However, he retired from the Veterans Administration after over 30 years of service as a Burn Technician. He attended Texas Southern University to get his real estate license and launched another successful career in real estate.
During this time he, also, exhibited leadership as a community activist. He served as President of the Sunnyside Gardens/Bayou Estates Civic Club for fourteen years. He was an officer on the Martin Luther King Health Center Council and a volunteer for the South Central Houston Community Health Center, having been awarded its Healthcare Trailblazer Award. His concerns for others also lead him to receive recognition as a volunteer with the City of Houston Emergency & Disaster Personnel. He served as a legislative aide to former State Representative Ron Wilson for 7 years covering the Sunnyside Gardens and South Park neighborhoods. So, as a civic leader, he reached far beyond normal in his dedication to community. His annual birthday parties were something to look forward to, serving as a family reunion and block party for community residents and extended family for many, many years. His life exemplified the quote by Martin Luther King, Jr.: "Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'"
His hobbies included working as a community activist and being a professional mixologist, working as a bartender during the famous Houston Rodeo for many years.
He is a long-time member of Mt. Hebron Missionary Baptist Church and a mason with the Most Worshipful Abraham Grand Lodge.
At the age of 89, he peacefully passed away at home, November 1, 2015.
His memory will be cherished by his family and friends. He leaves a legacy of lasting memories to:
- His beloved children, Paul Willis (Nicolette), Michael Wayne (Cheryl Thompson Price) of Austin, TX, Anthony Ray and Mark Allen. He also leaves behind step children, Robert Grice and Deeda Ellis (Ellisor) of Phoenix, AZ.
