Elsie M. Bates, 82, of Markleysburg, Pa., passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2006, in Henry Clay Villa.

She was born May 26, 1923, in Salem, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Asa and Pearl Burgess Fike.

In addition to her parents, her husband, Jesse M. Bates in 1974, a son, Paul Bates and two brothers and two sisters predecease her.

Surviving are four children: Pauline Walters and husband, Jack of Hopwood, Pa., Caroline Henning and friend Larry Galloway of Markleysburg, Pa., Jesse J. Bates and wife, Susan of Markleysburg and Bernice Sweitzer and husband, Mark of Markleysburg; 11 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren; one sister, Leona Reckhart of Greys Landing.

Elsie was a member of Markleysburg Church of the Brethren.

Friends will be received in the DONALD R. CRAWFORD FUNERAL HOME, FARMINGTON, Pa., today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and on Friday until 1 p.m. the hour of service with the Rev. Martin Stewart officiating. Interment will follow in Thomas Cemetery.
