Gerald served as a Ordinary Seaman, S.S. Swiftsure, Merchant Marines during World War II.

He resided in Eastport, Washington County, Maine prior to the war.

The S.S. Swiftsure was hit by a German Torpedo which eventually caused the ship to catch fire and sink. However, none of the crew were lost in this sinking.

On October 21, 1942 the survivors of the S.S. Swiftsure left Capetown, South Africa on the S.S. Zaandam, which was sunk by U-174 (Thilo) on November 2, 1942.

16 of the original survivors from the S.S. Swiftsure died in this sinking.

Gerald was one of the " 16 " declared "Missing In Action" in this sinking.

He was posthumously awarded the Mariner's Medal and the Combat Bar with a Star!
