C.L. “Brownie” Brownlee of Wichita Falls peacefully passed away surrounded by family on November 5, 2015 at the age of 92.
Brownie was born August 24, 1923 in Wichita Falls to A.R. and Oma Brownlee. After graduating from Wichita Falls Senior High in 1941, he joined the United States Navy. He successfully participated in six major campaigns in the South and Asian Pacific, and was honorably discharged in January, 1945 with commendable service to his country. For the remainder of his life, he adorned the Veteran name with pride. After meeting the love of his life, Lola, they combined their lives and hearts in marriage on November 11, 1949.
Brownie attended Hardin Junior College, now Midwestern State University, for two years and was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone and Stewart and Stevenson before he opened Tastee Freez on Beverly Drive. Later, he changed the name to Brownie’s Burgers, and opened a second store on the corner of Lincoln, and Eastside Drive. Every customer was remembered and greeted with his infectious smile.
Brownie dedicated hundreds of hours of volunteer work to his community through the many associations in which he participated. He was a dignified and honored Noble of Maskat Shrine, and a longtime member of Faith Masonic Lodge #1158. He was a lifetime member, and director, of the North West Texas Field and Stream, serving as president in 1973.
He received the most joy from fishing, sport shooting, gardening, and cooking, but most importantly spending time with his loving family. He also delighted in drinking coffee with his buddies and being around friends. He loved his life, and lived it to the absolute fullest.
Brownie is survived by his adoring wife of 66 years, Lola; a son, Kim Brownlee; granddaughter Carissa Davis and husband Mike; great-grandchildren Ciera and Shelby Davis; niece Krin Boswell; and nephew Russ Brownlee.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Valdon R. Brownlee, and sister, Louis S. Hollingsworth.
Brownie’s life will be celebrated at 10 am Monday, November 9, 2015 in the chapel of Owens and Brumley Funeral Home of Wichita Falls with Reverend Howard Chapman officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Crestview Memorial Park. All who loved and cherished him are welcome to attend.
He was loved by all who met him and was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will be dearly missed by everyone who knew him, and his humor and contagious smile will be embedded into our hearts forever.
