Miller entered the University in 1938 from Charlotte Central High School, where he had been an outstanding athlete in baseball and basketball, and he participated in both at UNC. The Rev. Billy Graham wrote that during his early life, Julian Miller "was my best friend."

Miller was inducted into the U.S. Army in October 1942. He went to aircraft mechanic's school and gunnery school before going overseas in November 1943.

Miller was assistant engineer and waist gunner aboard a B-24 heavy bomber of the 22nd Bomb Group. On Feb. 29, 1944, his aircraft crashed shortly after take-off from its base in New Guinea, killing all aboard. Miller's partial remains were returned to the U.S. and a graveside ceremony was held on April 9, 1944, at Sardis Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church in Charlotte.

The crews' remains were returned to the U.S. and buried at Arlington National Cemetery in April 1998.
