EPHRAIM SMITH READ (1839-1917)
READ, Ephraim, Smith, Born 1 May 1839, Fairfield, Vt., third child of Charles Rensselaer Read and Sally Smith Read. A member of the Ranson Guards, he enlisted in the 1st. Vermont Infantry, 2 May 1861, was mustered in 9 May 1861 and assigned to Company C with the rank of private; mustered out with his Regiment 15 August 1861.
Reenlisted 25 February 1862 in the 3rd. Regiment, Vermont Infantry, mustered in 12 April 1862; and assigned to Company B with the rank of private. Present with his regiment in New York City, due to the draft riots Promoted Corporal; promoted Sergeant, 1 November 1864; mustered out 22 April 1865. Married Hennietta Sturges. Incomplete family record show one son, Charles J. Read, born 31 October 1866. After the war owned and worked a large farm "adjoining the railroad station," East Fairfield, Vt. Died 23 July 1917; buried Smith Cemetery, Fairfield, Vt. Grave site marked by a large, hard to read, Obelisk styled marker.
