Betty Jewell Nunley
November 26, 1925 - November 2, 2015

Betty Jewell Jordan Nunley passed away November 2, 2015, in Austin, Texas. She was born to Edwin Rudolph Jordan, Sr. and Jewell Christena Woolsey Jordan on Thanksgiving Day, November 26th, 1925, in Austin, Texas.

In 1947, she married Jack Valentine Nunley in the old St. Martin's Ev. Lutheran Church, where she had been baptized and confirmed.

After graduating from Austin High School in 1943, Betty attended the University of Texas at Austin. With further studies she became a super secretary and office manager. She loved working at the University of Texas, first at KLRU and later at the UT African and African American Studies Center. She retired after 33 years and loved her many trips to Eagle Nest, NM and South Padre Island.

In her youthful free time during the WWII years, she became the Jitterbug champ while volunteering with her mother at the USO and at the Lutheran Service Center in downtown Austin on E. 5th St. On Sundays, during that time of war, she helped her father select a serviceman at the Center to invite home for Sunday lunch. The old Jordan guest book shows the names of dozens of the servicemen from all over the United States who visited their home for a good meal.

Betty was a long-time member of St. Martin's Lutheran Church and later First Baptist Church.

She is preceded in death by Jack Nunley, her former husband and her parents.

Betty is survived by her son Mark Stephen Nunley and wife Sheila Bunge Nunley; her daughter Karen Elizabeth Nunley and husband Steve Weikal, all of Austin; her grandson Nathan Andrew Nunley and wife Courtney and their daughter, Bryce Hope of Lynnfield, MA; her grandson Benjamin Evans Nunley of Seattle, WA; sister Martha Jordan Scott of Dallas and brother Edwin Rudolph Jordan, Jr.; niece Suzanne La Rash and husband Steve and nephew Robert Scott of Dallas.

A visitation will be held Thursday, November 5, 2015 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home at 3125 N. Lamar. Funeral services will be on Friday, November 6, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 901 Trinity. Interment at Austin Memorial Park will be private.
