Cyrus L. Witmer [sic], 79, for many years tax collector of Manheim, died Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock, at his home in Manheim, of complications after an illness of one week. He was a member of the Manheim Post of G. A. R. and served in Company G. of the 195th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was a life long member of the United Brethren church, Manheim, and for many years served as a trustee. He was one of the oldest residents of Manheim and a member of Manheim: Council 154, O. U. A. M. and of the Brotherhood of America. One daughter, Mrs. John Zink, and three grandchildren, all of Manheim, and the following brothers and sisters survive: Sue Witmyer, Hoosick Falls, N. Y.; Mrs. Levi Saylor, Lancaster; Mrs. Harry Worlich, Utica, N. Y.; John, Manheim; Grant, of Sparrows Point, Md. Funeral services were held f r om the late home on Saturday afternoon, with further services in the Salem United Brethren church, Manheim. Burial was made in Fairview cemetery. [Lititz (PA) Record, Thursday, 6 May 1926, pg. 5, column 2]The son of Henry & Anna (Long) Witmoyer, in 1860 he was a farm laborer living with and/or working for farmer Benjamin Metzler in Rapho Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. By 1865, he stood 5' 3" tall and had brown hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster February 17, 1865, as a private with Co. G, 195th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company January 31, 1866, at Washington DC.

He married Caroline Ensminger ca. 1870 and fathered Antoinette (b. 11/10/72 - married Monroe B. Gonter) and Sallie Luetta (b. 04/05/75 - married John A. Zink). Cause of his death is listed as "hypostatic congestion of the lungs" with "dilatation of the heart" a contributing factor.
