On 31 March 1899, William married Helena Riedel in Stearns County, MN; he was age 36, she was 21.

Padua Pioneer Passed Away Monday

William E. Rooney, 76, Buried Wednesday Morning at Padua

William E. Rooney, a resident of Raymond Township for seventy years, passed away Monday morning at 11:30 o'clock after an illness of two weeks. Mr. Rooney, who was active until that time, suffered a paralytic stroke about two weeks ago, and death came to him at his home 2 1/2 miles southwest of Padua. He was 76 years old when called from this earth.

Mr. Rooney was born in Ontario, Canada, on October 29, 1862. His parents came to Minnesota, where they resided in Minneapolis for a short time. They then moved to Raymond Township where they homesteaded the farm, which was Mr. Rooney's home until his death Monday. Mr. Rooney was about six years old when the family settled in the Padua community.

Forty years ago Mr. Rooney was united in marriage to Miss Helena Reidel, the ceremony being solemnized at Spring Hill.

As one of the pioneers deceased was active in community affairs and for almost half a century served as chairman of the school board. He aided in the organization of the cooperative creamery at Padua and for a time served as one of its directors. Mr. Rooney, through his long years of residence in the Padua community because well known to many people who respected and honored him.

Surviving relatives are his bereaved wife, nine sons and three daughters. The sons are: Edmund, Leo, Howard and Leonard, all at home; Felix, Robert and Walter, of Padua; Joe, of West Union; Emmet, of St. Cloud. The daughters are: Mrs. John Ahles (Mary), of St. Cloud; Mrs. John Steinhoff (Agnes), of Padua; and Miss Marvel, at home. There are also seventeen surviving grandchildren and one brother, Hugh Rooney, of Brooten.

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Padua. Rev. Fr. Schreitz, the pastor, read the Requiem Mass. Interment was made in the Padua cemetery.

Pallbearers selected from among old friends and relatives in the Padua community were: Roy Killeen, George Rooney, Art Rooney, Charles Majerus, Herman Weiner and Andrew Murpy. Frank Essler was crossbearer.

Flynn and Mr. and Mrs. George Brooks, of St. Cloud; Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Rooney and daughter, Mable, and son Arthur, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Landwehr and Mr. and Mrs. John Rooney, of Sedan; Mr. and Mrs. Mike Allen, of Sauk Centre; Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Killeen, of Clearwater; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Killeen, of Grey Eagle; Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Taylor, of Belgrade; Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Murphy, of Holdingford.

William E. Rooney, a resident of Raymond township near Padua, died Monday morning after being ill about two weeks. He was 76 years old, born in Canada. His parents moved to Minneapolis when he was three years old, lived there three years, and then took a homestead where Mr. Rooney continued to live for the next 70 years.

For 50 years Mr. Rooney has been chairman of the board of education in District 7 and he was formerly a director of the creamery board.

Mrs. Rooney survives with 12 children, nine boys and three girls. These are Edmund, Leo, Howard, Leonard and Marvel at home; Felix, Walter, Robert, and Mrs. John Steinhoff in Padua; Mrs. John Ahles and Emmet Rooney in St. Cloud; Joseph in West Union. A brother, Hugh Rooney, lives in Brooten. There are 17 grandchildren.

The funeral was held on Wednesday, Nov. 16, at St. Anthony Catholic church in Padua with burial in the cemetery there, Father Schreitz the officiating priest.

Pallbearers were Roy Killeen, George and Arthur Rooney, Charles Majerus, Herman Wiener, Andrew Murphy. Frank Essler was cross bearer.
