MARION - Mary Lynn Batson, 60, died Monday, November 2, 2015 at home after a brief illness. Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 5, 2015 at Marion Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery, directed by Richardson Funeral Home.
Ms. Batson was born in Florence, a daughter of Mary Cheatham Batson and the late Dr. Paul O. Batson, Jr.
Upon graduation from Baptist College (now Charleston Southern) in Charleston, SC, she was employed by Marion County as the first Parole/Probation Officer for juvenile delinquents. Later, she began a new career in Washington, DC as an Administrative Assistant to (then) Congressman John Napier, and later to Senator J. Strom Thurmond. She also was employed by the law firm of Black, Manafort, Stone, et. al in Washington. Upon returning to South Carolina, she worked for four Governors in the State of South Carolina, Honorables Carroll Campbell, James Hodges, David Beasley, and Mark Sanford in various capacities. Due to health issues, she retired several years ago from the Human Resources Department at Francis Marion University.
She was a member of Marion Baptist Church where her father served as Pastor for 28 years, and she was a firm believer in the power of prayer. She devoted her life to reaching out to those in need, to her dogs, her books, her friends and her family.
Surviving are her mother, Mary Cheatham Batson of Marion; brothers, Mr. Paul O. Batson, III (Ann) of Greenville, SC and Dr. John Batson of Greenville, SC; special friend, Lt. Jeff Fuller; as well as many cousins.
