He was a prosperous merchant of Peterhead, Scotland. He purchased Arbuthnot House in Peterhead during 1768 from Robert Arbuthnot of Haddo-Rattray and during 1786 he bought the Haddo-Rattray estate from Alexander Farquharson, an accountant of Edinburgh.

On February 21, 1775 he wed Catherine Cumine (born 22 February 1752; died 6 November 1787), daughter of George Cumine of the now ruined Pitully Castle, near Fraserburgh and sister of Barbara Cumine who was married to Alexander Annand of Haddo-Rattray.

Here are deposited the remains of CATHERINE CUMINE daughter of George Cumine Esq. of Pitully and wife of James Arbuthnot Esqr. Of Dens, merchant in Peterhead born 22 Feb 1752 died 6 Nov 1787 aged 35 years and the remains of their eldest son
THOMAS ARBUTHNOT born 3rd Dec 1775 died 4th Aug 1800 aged 24 years; also here are deposited the remains of the said
JAMES ARBUTHNOT Esq. of Dens born 23rd Aug 1741 died 19th March 1823 aged 82 years.
This tablet has been erected by George, William and Robert Arbuthnot sons and brothers of the deceased as a mark of their affection to them while living and from respect to the memory of parents and a brother so deservedly dear to them.
