John Durwood Whiteside Jr. passed away peacefully at the Star Valley Medical Center in Afton, Wyoming, on Oct. 22, 2015, at age 61.

Born in Coleman, Texas, on March 9, 1954, most of his life was spent in Texas, Utah, and New Orleans, Louisiana. John graduated high school in New Orleans, in 1972.

He is survived by his beloved wife, of 36 years, Ronda Whiteside. He was an attentive, kind and faithful husband and provider. His family was more important to him than anything else, and he always considered his family first, in all of his choices in life. He was preceded in death by his dear father John Durwood Whiteside, Sr. His mother, Dorothy Jolene Whiteside, whom he lovingly cared for after the passing of his father, now lives in McKinney, Texas. He is also survived by his children: Emma Whiteside, of Portland, Oregon; and Hannah Whiteside, of Denver, Colorado; brother, Edgar Allen Whiteside, and wife Jeannette, of LaPorte, Texas.; sister, Linda Ann deVilleneuve and husband Doug of Talladega, Alaska,; sister, Mary Susan Tull and husband Nelson, of McKinney, Texas.; sister, Karen Brasher and husband, Nugent, of Glenwood, New Mexico, and numerous nieces and nephews.

For 36 years, John was formally known as a Petroleum Landman, but his expertise extended into many aspects of the oil industry, including engineering, geology and production. His knowledge was well appreciated by his contemporaries and enabled him to serve his clients in a well-rounded capacity. Throughout his career he worked in numerous states in the U.S. for many major oil companies. John and Ronda established Land Professionals, Inc., where he worked with and mentored many Petroleum Landmen over the years. He was well known throughout the industry as a hardworking, fair man of great integrity. He was highly respected by everyone who came in contact with him and was considered a great blessing to the lives of the many people he touched.

Graveside services were held at Bedford, Wyoming Cemetery, on Monday, October 26, 2015. There will be a Celebration of Life for John, in Vernal, Utah, on Nov. 14, 2015, at the Elks Lodge, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., and also a Celebration of Life in McKinney, Texas, on March 22, 2016 (friends may call for time and location, also to be announced on social media). In lieu of flowers, memorials to Afton Food Bank, Afton Town Hall, 416 S. Washington, Afton, Wyoming 83110 are appreciated, or to the charity of your choice.
