A VFW graveside memorial service was held at East Line Street Cemetery for Lee Lloyd Summers, 73, who passed away in Fresno on June 26. Mr. Summers was born in Bishop on August 10, 1912 to Lloyd and Sybil McGee Summers. He was an accomplished athlete, lettering in basketball, baseball, track, and football at Bishop High, and played on Bishop's first football team in 1928, before graduating in 1930, with a football scholarship to USC. His family said he didn't enjoy the academic side of college, however, and he returned home where he worked, and eventually owned the Mammoth Pack Station until it was sold in 1955 to Lou Roeser. He worked with horses and packing many different places, including a wilderness packer for the Forest Service. He was honored as packer of the year at Mule Days and grand marshal at Mammoth Gold Rush Days. He served in the Army during World War II, and was a member of VFW Post 8988, The Bishop Elks, and E. Clampus Vitus. Mr. Summers lived all his life in Bishop before moving to Coarsegold this year to spend his final days with his son John. he is survived by sons Don of Los Angeles and John of Coarsegold, grandchildren Glenn and Jason of Los Angeles and Jared of Coarsegold, brother Verne Summers of Bishop, nephew Lloyd of Bishop, nieces Lisa Eldridge and Lynn Clay of Bishop, and Laurel of San Diego, great-niece Coral Lee Clay and great-nephew Dustin Eldridge.
