She was born on August 11, 1947 in Hicksville, Ohio, the daughter of the late Virl and Margaret (Stauffer) Rex.

One of her many teaching highlight was her trip to Russia where she participated in a teacher exchange program. After retirement, Virlynn taught several semesters at IUPU in Fort Wayne with the English department. She also worked as a substitute teacher and tutor in the Hicksville Village Schools. Virlynn touched many lives.

Musically, Virlynn was noted for her strong alto in groups such as The Undertones and The Four Grace.

A lifelong member of Grace United Methodist Church, Virlynn was music director, chancel choir director, and co-president of the UMW. She was well known for her special event programs and was planning the Christmas Eve service before she became ill.
